Cardiac arrhythmia and it’s management03-03-2009
<<< Back

Cardiac arrhythmia are abnormally slow (bradycardia), fast (tachycardia) or irregular heart beats (extrasistoli, atrial fibrillation)

Cardiac arrhythmia may cause palpitation sensation, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting or even cardiac arrest

Cardiac arrhythmia may happened to sick patient (for example after myocardial infarction) or to the healthy patient without previous heart disease

Almost ALL cardiac arrhythmia can be successfully treated by drugs, by ABLATION procedure or by PACEMAKER (or defibrillator) implantation

Ablation procedure is performed by endovascular (femoral vessels) approach under local anesthesia. It is usually painless, taking one-two hours and one overnight stay in the hospital

Pacemaker/defibrillator implantation is small surgery under local anesthesia. Device is put under the skin in left chest. It is usually painless, taking about one hour and one overnight stay in the hospital

In particular cases patients with serious heart disease who is in risk for sudden cardiac arrest can be recommended to implant defibrillator (ICD) even without cardiac arrhythmia

In some patients who suffered from cardiac failure despite medical therapy more sophisticated pacemakers (biventricular devices) can be helpful to improve the symptoms. Implantation of such device can take few hours
